Hate Crime & Safe Spaces

Information and resources on what a hate crime is, how to report it to the police or via third-party reporting centres, getting victim support, and Safe Places in Walsall.

Hate Crime

If you have experienced or witnessed a hate crime or incident, it can be daunting to report it but there are organisations that are there to support you. A hate crime is motivated by prejudice because of: race, religion, sexuality, disability, or because you’re transgender.

Police will usually only investigate the incident if a crime has happened (e.g. assault, vandalism etc), however, hate incidents such as verbal or online abuse will still be taken seriously. If you experience more than one hate incident by the same person or group of people, it might count as harassment. Harassment can be a crime.

Hate crime can be reported directly to the police; either online, by calling 101 or by visiting your local police station. 

If, for whatever reason, you don't want to talk to the police, you can report hate crimes via a third-party centre such as:

A Safe Place offers help if someone is anxious, scared or at risk while they are out and about and need support. Especially in light of recent events, if you have experienced Hate Crime, a Safe Space can support you to report any hate crime or incidents to the relevant agency.
